The Controller oversees all financial operations of the company, ensuring accurate accounting, timely reporting, and strong internal controls. This role supports strategic decision-making, manages the accounting team, and partners with operations leadership to drive profitability across service lines. The ideal candidate has experience in a fast-paced home services environment with multiple revenue streams, technicians, and job costing requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee all accounting operations, including AP, AR, payroll, general ledger, job costing, and financial reporting.
- Produce monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- Prepare rolling forecasts, cash flow projections, and budget variance analyses.
- Monitor financial performance by branch, division, or business unit.
- Maintain an accurate chart of accounts aligned to service-based operations.
Operational Partnership
- Work closely with operations managers to interpret financial data and improve margins.
- Analyze technician productivity, revenue per job, gross margin by service, and seasonal trends.
- Support pricing strategies, including labor rate modeling, material markups, and flat-rate book review.
- Partner with dispatch, call center, and field management to streamline invoicing and collections.
Cash Flow, Billing & Collections
- Manage weekly cash flow, ensuring appropriate reserves for payroll, vendor payments, and growth initiatives.
- Oversee the billing process to reduce delays and improve first-time invoice accuracy.
- Implement and monitor collections processes for both residential and commercial accounts.
- Ensure daily reconciliation of deposits, credit card payments, and field-collected funds.
Internal Controls & Compliance
- Establish and maintain strong internal controls, especially around inventory, purchasing, and job costing.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations.
- Coordinate annual reviews or audits with external auditors.
- Oversee risk management activities, including insurance renewals and claims reporting.
Team Leadership
- Manage and mentor accounting staff (AP/AR specialists, payroll, staff accountants).
- Create accountability through defined KPIs and performance metrics.
- Improve department efficiency through process redesign and automation.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- CPA or CMA preferred, but not required.
- 5-10+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in home services, construction, trades, or similar service industries.
- Strong understanding of job costing, revenue recognition, and service-based labor models.
- Experience with financial systems commonly used in home services (e.g., ServiceTitan, FieldEdge, ServiceFusion, QuickBooks, Sage, NetSuite).
- Exceptional analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to influence operations teams.
